Relief from the Sweltering Heat

It was hot. Stifling. The kind of damp heat that takes your breath away. It was like that most days in the courtyard at Don Francisco’s home where people came from more than 100 KM away to wait to see the healer.

The family graciously offered their home as an escape from the sun. After all, their clients couldn’t very well bake in the heat, especially with the threat of dehydration and under the conditions that most of them were infirmed and looking for help.

I know how hot it was. I sat there. And like the other seekers, I too was invited into the front room of the small Maya home. Well, to be fair there were only two rooms. The back room had a bed with a real mattress, a rare commodity. And the front room had several hammocks and some plastic chairs and a fan for the comfort of those waiting.

It wasn’t ideal. Not just for those who had come to seek help, but for the family either. They only had 2 rooms and having one occupied by strangers for most of the day made things uneasy. Raising four children (for four children lived in those 2 rooms with their mother and father), farming, grinding corn, raising pigs and chickens, cooking over an open fire in the shared family stand-alone kitchen, all became more challenging and a lot less peaceful.

And so, we came up with a plan.

It was so easy to install and was quickly made possible by donations from lovely people like you who are reading this story now. We were able to buy Malla Sombra shade covers for the entire courtyard area and put them up with the help of the family. All in all, 11 people live in the little family compound. It was a marvelous thing to see them working together to create a solution to the sweltering heat.

And not only did putting up the shade create a space for people to wait to see the healer without invading the privacy of the home, but it also helped cool the buildings on both sides of the courtyard--the home, and the healing space.

What a tremendous blessing to this family.

And it will be a blessing to you too if you come to visit. Because you can be one of the seekers, waiting for your turn to find healing for your body, mind, and soul in the healing room of Don Francisco. And now, you won't melt in the heat while you wait!

A special thanks to those who gave for this project <3

Hugs and butterflies,

laura.
